Description

Taking pre-algebra? Then you need the Wolfram Pre-Algebra Course Assistant. This definitive app for pre-algebra—from the world leader in math software—will help you work through your homework problems, ace your tests, and learn pre-algebra concepts. Forget canned examples! The Wolfram Pre-Algebra Course Assistant solves your specific pre-algebra problems on the fly. This app covers the following pre-algebra topics: - Find the divisors and prime factorization of a number - Calculate the GCD and LCM of two numbers - Determine the percent change - Reduce and round numbers - Evaluate expressions - Solve equations and simplify expressions - Convert units of length, area, volume, and weight - Compute the mean, median, and mode of a dataset - Plot equations on the coordinate plane - Graph inequalities on a number line - Calculate the area, surface area, or volume of a geometric figure - Find the midpoint, slope, and distance between two points The Wolfram Pre-Algebra Course Assistant is powered by the Wolfram|Alpha computational knowledge engine and is created by Wolfram Research, makers of Mathematica—the world's leading software system for mathematical research and education. The Wolfram Pre-Algebra Course Assistant draws on the computational power of Wolfram|Alpha's supercomputers over a 3G, 4G, or Wi-Fi connection.

I have never seen an app like this. It seems as if this app was tailored just for me. Overall this is an exceptionally wonderful app.
  • Algebra App is Good - Graph Paper is Better

Although I have given positive reviews to wolfram apps over the years, I must say that the advertising on the start-up screen is offensive. I have not seen this from any other company. For the future great mathematicians that will be here in 20 years, I would sleep easier had they started their math career using pencils and reams of graph paper. As it is now, we will lose in the long run to countries that are too poor to provide computers or iPads to their children. Perhaps, for every child that uses this app, Wolfram could donate a package containing a variety of graph paper for them to xerox and use in their pursuit of math perfection.
  • Step 1 on the road to Mathematica

I've been using this app during Dad and Daughter Math Night with my 10yo. We're using it to explore topics that are part of her regular math class, often ahead of the class. I think it's terrific. You should know that this is basically a learner-friendly front end to Wolfram Alpha, which in turn incorporates many of the functions of Mathematica (a high end professional math tool). So there's a natural progression from pre-algebra through the other wolfram apps to Mathematica (of course by 2022 who knows what kids will use). It requires a data connection to work. The only downside is that nobody yet provides a math curriculum based on this tool. That's what we need to give it five stars. I'm surprised that hasn't happened yet, it would make a great eBook.

My one complaint is that apparently when you ask the program to calculate Mean, Median, & Mode for a string of numbers you must re-enter the number string for each answer. I would expect you should be able to enter the number string once and have the program spit out all 3 answers at the same time.
  • NOT a tutoring app!

I wanted an app that I could recommend to my students who needed a review or tutoring...this is NOT that...this app does the work for them. That said, it is slick and well laid out.

It does not calculate the surface area of a cone!
